SARAH ANNE (SHIRLEY) WINN

From 1786-until her marriage, Sarah likely was living with her parents in Croydon, Surrey. John & Sarah
were married by licence, ceremony performed by Robert Price, curate, witnesses: S[arah] B[ethiah] Rice &
Thomas Head. Her occupation in Toronto following John's death leads one to suspect that prior to marriage
she may have been a teacher. Sarah Rice was a teacher in an Academy for Ladies, in Croydon [what
relation, if any, Rev. Robert Price to the Mrs. Mary Price who in 1875/6 bequeathed large sums of money to
the 5 living children of Sarah (Shirley) Winn ]

Following marriage she & John lived in Southwark, a London 'suburb' south of the Thames River; in 1822 &
1833 on the Borrough High Street (at #130 in 1833). [the following address, "Weymouth Place, Surrey", may
also have some association with Sarah.]

In 1833, when her husband left for Upper Canada, Sarah & children remained behind in England, obviously
planning to join husband/father as soon as they received word from him. In May 1834, Sarah & the 7 children
arrived at New York from London on the barque GENTO. From there they would have proceeded to Toronto
via the Hudson River-Erie Canal-Lake Ontario route. [Erie Canal was completed in 1825; Oswego Canal in
1828] From 1835-37 the family resided on the east side of York St. Toronto; Walton's CITY OF TORONTO &
HOME DISTRICT DIRECTORY... for 1835-37 lists the Misses Winn, operating a Ladies School, at this address.

From 1838-40 Sarah (& some, if not all of her children) was a tenant in a house on the south side of Newgate
St; her landlord & direct neighbour was Jno. Harper, a builder / carpenter. 1842 Canada Census. Toronto,
St. Patrick's Ward [now western extension, Adelaide St.] lists Sarah as "school mistress, Newgate St."
Lewis' Toronto Directory for 1843-4 lists "Mrs. Winn, Seminary, Newgate St. nr York"; the proprietor(s) of
said property being W.W. Baldwin & John Harper.

Four months after daughter Anna Maria's marriage to Fred'k Coate in Toronto, Sarah dies in Montreal. Could
it be that she along with at least two of her daughters, (e,g. Jane & Minnie... and possibly Ellen) had also
moved there to live with John, or was Sarah merely visiting when she took ill? )

OBITs: "At Montreal on Sunday 22nd inst., Sarah Anne, widow of the late John Horner Winn of Toronto,
aged 61 years." [death notice THE CHURCH, Toronto 27.8.1847], And, "on the 22nd instant, in this city, ages
62yrs, Sarah Anne, widow of the late John Horner Winn of Toronto and formerly of London, England" [THE
GAZETTE (Montreal) Aug. 26, 1847]

An extract from Mtl. Royal Cemetery records, August 23rd, 1847: Sarah Ann Shirley wife of John Horner
Winn died on the 22nd, aged 62 years, buried by Rev'd Mr. Adamson in a single grave in the old cemetery
located on Papineau St. at the top of Chenneville St. north of Craig St., St. Lawrence Ward. On 14 October
1862 Sarah's stone & remains were removed to Mount Royal Cemetery, sect.F #207. (Aug 1988 - stone
now broken). [Sarah's death/burial record was not found in the registers of Montreal area Anglican churches,
but Rev'd W. Agar Adamson, was an Ass't Christ Church, Notre Dame St. between the years 1844-49.]

Coate-Winn Family historian, Dorothy Coate, speculated that Sarah might be the daughter of / or related to
Rev. Shirley, "the [Irish] hymnist". Subsequent research on Sarah's SHIRLEY ancestry, 'proves' Dorothy's
suppositions incorrect.
